You Can't Be Everywhere

Every once in a while you pick up a book that helps you wade through the online jungle of digital marketing advice and clear your thinking. That's exactly what Marie Wiese's book, You Can't Be Everywhere: A Common Sense Approach to Digital Marketing for Any Business, did for me.

If you have a business, I suggest you read this book. Your customers and prospects size you up in about eight seconds when they check out your Web site. Grabbing their attention is a major online currency.

Marketing models have changed forever, and you need a clear head to navigate the digital marketing terrain.

To see how Marie has done it on her own Web site, check out www.MarketingCopilot.com. If you scroll all the way to the bottom you'll find some very valuable educational content under "Digital Resources". She does a great job modeling her common sense approach with her own digital marketing.

Strolling Through the Forest

We live in Brunswick Forest, a 10-year old planned community in Leland, NC. One of the reasons we chose to live here is the amount of beautiful and well-tended green spaces and the emphasis on a wellness lifestyle.

Here are a few photos I took on one day, during my frequent walks through the Forest.

One of our neighbors goes all out each year with Halloween decorations. A few scary creatures sneaked into his front garden!

And a few more of their relatives invaded his neighbor's yard!

By midday, the mauve ferns in the park were calling me to take some time and sit on the nearby bench for a brief mediation.

And at dusk, the pumpkins cane out of their hiding places behind the bushes!

At sunset, the community gathered in one of the central parks for a picnic and concert, illuminated with pumpkin-shaped lights.

No matter what the season, the Forest never disappoints!

A Life-changing Book on Many Levels

Basta! A Doctor's Story of Giving Back
Mark Twain said, "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." I just finished reading the book, Basta!, and thought, wow, the author is someone who discovered why he was born, and he never stops staying in action to fulfill his life purpose. What an inspiration!

The author of Basta!, Dr. Darius R. Maggi, totally achieved his purpose in writing his story, which is to inspire others to give more of themselves. Basta! is a remarkable book written by a remarkable humanitarian. In his book, Dr. Maggi shares his humble story of practicing medicine in the U.S., retiring from a health care system that has left the patient behind, and finding a place in dire need where he could continue to follow his calling to serve patients.

Dr. Darius Maggi was raised by his father and grandfather in rural southeastern Oklahoma. Through their actions and personalities, they helped shape a personable, selfless, and hard-working professional.

After building a thriving OB/GYN practice in Denison, Texas, Dr. Maggi was forced to declare Basta! or Enough! to the growing litigious culture that was strangling his passion to serve his patients. So he retired from practicing medicine in the U.S. after 22 years and searched for a way to contribute his services without the administrative and legal shackles. He found his calling in Sierra Leone, where he can selflessly serve thousands of women who desperately need his services.

He had dedicated his "retirement" years to performing obstetrical fistula surgeries on thousands of women in this third-world country. Their condition exists because of complications of labor, which are not routinely treated in underdeveloped countries due to relatively poor medical services.

To create a long-term solution of this treatable condition, Dr. Maggi founded the West Africa Fistula Foundation (WAFF) in 2004. You can learn more about the foundation at

If after reading Basta!, you don’t spend a considerable amount of time planning how you can give more of yourself to help others, I will be quite surprised. It has certainly had that effect on me!

Lifestyle Entrepreneur

I finally found the right label for me - Lifestyle Entrepreneur!

Here's the definition I borrowed from Tai Lopez (tailopez.com).

A lifestyle entrepreneur starts with a simpler question... "How do
I build a business around the lifestyle I want to live, instead of building my lifestyle around my business?"

Lifestyle entrepreneurs focus on three core things:

1. Freedom of location
Ability to work where and when you want.

2. Low fixed costs
Ability to start and manage the business with low overhead.

3. Flexibility of time
Ability to manage the business with as little time invested as needed.

Here's how these three core things translate for me:

1. Freedom of location - My husband, Bruce, and I, with our dog, Happy, plan to live for six months each year in New England and six months each year in a much warmer climate, either in North Carolina or further south. We're already planning our first summer back in New England in 2017. This is possible because we've kept our work completely portable. We can't wait to reunite with part of our family, revisit favorite places, and explore new locales while we're there.

2. Low fixed costs - All we currently need for our businesses are a few computers and our phones. That's the way we intend to keep it, until such time as we need virtual help. We have had brick and mortar businesses with employees and have decided never to go down that path again.

3. Flexibility of time - It's important for me to be able to go for walks, workout, and cook during the day, when it's most convenient for me. I also love to be able to drop everything for a week if one of our kids calls and needs help with their family. I have been able to do that numerous times over the past several years, since our five grandchildren have arrived. There is no dollar value I can put on this time flexibility.

So whenever anyone asks me what I do for a living, I'll now answer I'm a lifestyle entrepreneur with an online marketing business. This is a dream come true!

Two Ways to Give

Today I want to share two amazing ways for you to stretch those giving muscles!

The first is due to Hurricane Matthew, which tore through our town, Wilmington, North Carolina, last week. We are still feeling the impact of swollen rivers and flooding.

Our friends, Margi and Doug Erickson, who own a distinguished historical B&B in downtown Wilmington, the C.W. Worth House, experienced roof damage from the storm's heavy rains. You can click on this link and donate any amount to help them restore their roof and stay in business.

1/4 C. semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1/4 C. chopped raw pecans, toasted

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Lightly coat baking sheet.

4. Drop by heaping tablespoons onto baking sheet and flatten with a spatula.

I discovered that our dog, Happy, likes these treats, too! She managed to snag one before I took them off the baking sheet.
